Driving instructor training by Ely School of Driving
Many individuals are attracted to the prospect of becoming a driving instructor due to the freedom it offers. Being able to work the days and hours you wish is without doubt a desirable attribute. Combine this with meeting and teaching a diverse assortment of individuals is what draws many to the driving instruction profession.
Where to start if you want to become a driving instructor
Before you can apply to become a driving instructor, you will need to have held a UK driving licence for a minimum of three and a half years and at the time of applying, you must have no more than 5 penalty points on your licence. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) requires that anyone applying to become a driving instructor must undergo a criminal record check. Once these formalities have been met the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) Starter Pack may be applied for from the DSA by calling 08701 214 202. The starter pack currently costs £5.00. Enclosed in the starter pack is form ADI 3. This will allow you to apply to be entered on the DSA register of driving instructors. Once you have entered the register, your training can begin.
Driving instructor training - the process
The qualifying process of becoming a driving instructor involves 3 exams. Known as Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3, they need to be taken in numerical order. Similar to the learner driver theory test, Part 1 involves 100 multiple choice questions compared to the standard 50 for learner drivers. This is followed by the hazard perception test which comprises of 14 video clips.
The Part 2 test again is similar to the learner driver practical driving test. The test is of course more difficult, lasts longer and a maximum of 6 minors is permitted.
Part 3 is to test your ability to teach. This test lasts for 1 hour and is divided into 2 tests known as phases. Phase 1 could be to teach the examiner reversing to the left or right. The examiner will have a certain amount of driving experience to enable him to drive to a ideal location. Phase 2 will involve the examiner being a more advanced driver and will need to be taught emerging at junctions.
Ely School of Driving offer highly experienced instructor trainers. You will be taught on a one-to-one basis with the same trainer throughout the duration of your course. Although it is often better to take our courses on a part-time basis due to waiting times for exams, our courses can be taken intensively if required. A pay-as-you-go option is available to spread the costs. Discounts do apply however if courses fees are paid for in bulk.
A trainee driving instructor licence can be applied for once you have completed Part 1, Part 2 and have completed 40 hours of training towards Part 3. Once the trainee licence has been received, you can teach for pay for up to 6 months. Valuable experience is gained by the trainee licence towards taking the Part 3.
If you are training with Ely School of Driving as a Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), we will offer you a position within our driving school. Complete help and support will be provided as will your desired amount of pupils to teach. Once fully qualified, your position with our school remains open if desired.
